I said that "I am not too familiar with US based research grants". I also said that I have no idea what the Fox news fan club is supposed to be. That is is where I "admitted some lack of knowledge" about the USA, as you say. However I also said that: "I know very well what publish or perish is (unjustified patronizing tone again, I note), William. I have some scientific publications, William, and we have pretty much the same academic system here in Israel, as in the USA (including getting tenured etc)." [Baruch, 2003-11-04] In fact I've spent some time in the USA academic system, in Fort Collins C0. I am also quite familiar with the UK academic system, in addition to the Israeli, of course. So, when I talk about the people from the academia, I know, it means quite a lot of people, from three different countries, but having similar academic systems. That doesn't make my statements "absolute", as you say. But, IMHO, they are significant enough in countering statements like: "...but they often can't do any significant research either. (Depends on the field, of course.)" [William, 2003-10-22]. That was said in reply to my: "A Prof with a tenure that doesn't have much contract money doesn't go out of business." [Baruch, 2003-10-22] Note your rather strong words "often" and "any". As to what looks like an insurance policy (or a sort of disclaimer) of "Depends on...", well, it doesn't make much sense that the academic system and academic freedom concepts should be significantly different in, say chemistry dept from that of math, or biology. Even in the great USA. Well, if some mysterious "reports they send back from the front lines..." give a different picture, I guess, I am expected to accept them as "facts" about the USA. Well, I might not do that, William. --Baruch
