Nope, dude, I never said it was typical. I kept using words like "may"
and "can", and stressed that it didn't apply to all fields. (Depends on
the overhead of research - losing corporate grants from some fields
probably wouldn't have much effect, in others it could have drastic
effects both for uinversities and individuals.)

This isn't a presumption, it's a fact of life in the U.S. It does happen.
And I keep stressing that I am talking about the U.S., of which you've
admitted some lack of knowledge. You've taken an absolute position
which can only be validated if there are no exceptions, anywhere.
(While, oddly, using phrases such as "Professors I know [...]" which
suggests even you aren't convinced there might not be exceptions.)
