Initial conditions in delay differential equations

Dear all,

does anybody know a good reference treating the problem
of initial conditions in delay differential equations
theoretically?
My first approach was random values, but which is problematic
for numerical reasons. Thus, I thought of smooth initials
but I am not sure how this influences my resulting solutions.
