Hello, I have been reading about thow the thyroid gland functions. I want to know what influences iodine uptake by my glands, when I get radiation tratement for my thyroid cancer. I have a few questions: logical guesses, even if you dont know for sure, are appreciated these are facts as I know them: 1. Enzyme TPO (thyroid peroxidase) acts as a catalyst to bind iodine and thyroglobulin to get T3 and T4 eventually. This is called "iodination of thyroglobulin" and is how the iodine gets into the thyroid gland cells in the first place. 2. TPOAb(thyroidperoxidase antibody)/antimicrosomal antibodies act against TPO enzyme. 3. If there is less TPO enzyme, less iodine is taken up by thyroid cells. 4. Patients with TPOAb antibodies (all things being equal) will have a RELATIVELY less avid iodine absorption, because of the reduced action of TPO. So far is this logical and right ? does anybody have any pointers relating to hashimotos and radio iodine uptake ? Anita Hashimotos- May 2003 Pap Thyca- July 2003
