This article contains all sorts of dodgy statements. It is a very
dodgy idea to equate bipolar depression whose essence is a REPEATING
swing with something which gives you a single up-then-down which
never repeats. MDMA is methyl dimethoxy amphetamine, most SSRIs
are phenyl-alkyl amines with a longish chain, a further phenyl
ring with a strongly electronegative (usually fluorine) substituent
dependent early on the chain. They are not chemically THAT like
each other. The great majority of psychoactive drugs are anyway a
single phenyl ring, phenyl extended to indole, or two bridged
phenyl rings, plus an alkylamine chain: they're all much of a muchness.

SSRIs do not just "make people happy", if that's what you think
then you know nothing. Roughly speaking, by inducing more serotonin,
they somehow unjam receptors which produce an anti-calming and
anti-sleep effect, releasing the normal pro-calming and pro-sleep
effect, and also relieving the downward pressure on noradrenaline
and dopamine so that the reduction in physical and mental activity
clears up. Where such problems are not present SSRIs will not
have benefits on mood, although there is some evidence they
make you more tough-minded and resolute. Clear so far?
I think you've wandered off course a bit generally.
