I'm not sure it's such an elegant model, as it leaves out some of the 
pathophysiology.

Most kidney failure that nurses and doctors see these days is caused by 
the damage done from diabetes (high blood sugar) and HTN (the so-called 
"syndrome X").

It basically just blows out the kidneys.
