Osteoporosis in Scientific American

This feature article published in Scientific American gives a good deal
of information about our disease.

It covers the actual mechanisms of Osteoporosis as well as the history
and future of treatments.

It explains the apparent paradox concerning Parathyroid Hormone (PTH)
where elevated levels cause bone thinning yet it is what the bone
builder Forteo is based on.

The article also addresses the role of Insulin-like Growth Factor
(IGF-1)

It was written by Dr. Clifford J Rosen who is President of the American
Society for Bone and Mineral Research and has written several leading
textbooks on osteoporosis and bone health. 

He is also executive director of the Maine Center for Osteoporosis
Research and Education in Bangor, Me., and is adjunct staff scientist at
the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Me. He has been associate clinical
professor at Boston University Medical Center since 1993.
