  OK, I will suggest some pronunciations:

Shanxi: the "a" should be the ash vowel

Shaanxi:  the "aa" should be the vowel as in "palm"

  Of course I do prefer authentic pronunctions, 

  Doesn't  "shrrrrrrr   dzzzzzzzz" sound better than "shit zoo"
