In article <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, > In his "Letter from America" this week (heard via WNYC 10/5/03, 12:30 am > EDT; text available at the BBC website), Alastair Cooke took note of the > obituary for the translator who provided JFK with the line "Ich bin ein > Berliner" -- and claimed that as he watched the live broadcast of the > speech from Berlin, a burst of laughter preceded the ovation from the > crowd of 100,000. Folks, you all have it wrong. I personally witnessed that event--a couple of years before I was born, but hey, no problem there--and I assure you it wasn't JFK doing the speech at all. It was, in fact, a giant speaking jelly donut, possibly from outer space. Alas, the crowd didn't quite get it, because "Berliner" doesn't mean jelly donut in Berlin, but you have to cut giant speaking alien jelly donuts some slack. -- Christian "naddy" Weisgerber [EMAIL PROTECTED]
