If you have a dozen long winter evenings to spend on it,
find Douglas Hofstadter's "Le Ton Beau de Marot".
The title is in French but the book is in English.
It is huge, brilliant, and largely devoted to the impossibility
of translation. One of its sections is actually about
"why this book cannot be translated".

Another great book by D.H. which _was_ translated into a few
languages, but not before whole teams of eminent linguists
had cudgelled their brains with some of the heaviest matter
in the solar system, is "Goedel - Esher - Bach, the Eternal
Golden Braid". It is not explicitly about translation,
but inspired more than one reflection on it.

Enjoy.
Leszek.
