I think a point to consider is > >(i.e. is basically just a kanji dictionary arranged by grade level > >which tries to pass itself off as a kanji learning book)? Is a kanji dictionary arranged by grade level really /that/ bad a way of learning kanji? I don't know what "A Manual of Japanese Reading and Writing" contains, but I feel rather suspicious of kanji learning books that have handy mnemonics*, pictorial iconography things, spaces to write the kanji in with handy squares etc. If it's got the kanji, the readings, how to write it and some words using it - isn't that all you need? * Partly because I can't spell mnemonics.
