Yup you're right. I realised I was probably wrong sometime after I posted, but as I didn't have anything more useful to suggest. I do however have the feeling I've seen something like that once before in the dim and distant past (e.g. more than a month ago) Somethings you can try at random are 1. Removing and re-installing the IME, 2. Removing every input method /except/ the Japanese IME, 3. Turning the 'Language Bar' off / on from the taskbar toolbars options. 4. news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general (not necessarily in that order).
