I would say :
1. wavelet shrinkage (aka Donoho method) with translation invariance.
2. total variation minization
3. anisotropic smoothing

3. is related to mean curvature motion, and to iterated
median filter and/or opening/closing.

With a wavelet software (e.g. wavelab for matlab), 1. is straightforward
to implement.

topic.
