I work with intimately with Fourier Transforms in radar signal processing
applications...  I don't mean to be glib, but offer that if you want
anything more than a superficial understanding of Fourier Transforms, what
they mean, and what they imply, then you probably do in fact need to dive
into a mathematical treatment of it and its properties.

A great text on Fourier Transforms is by Bracewell, "The Fourier Transform &
Its Applications",
