No problems with the usb-serial adapter if the card is removed at boot time. Then, if the card is inserted, the adapter stops functioning. If both are inserted at boot time, you have to remove and reconnect the USB adapter, then it works. I haven't had a chance to research it further. My intuition is it's a plug-n-pray problem.
