I have a very similar problem. I've isolated it to some kind of
conflict with my wireless card. No problems with the usb-serial
adapter if the card is removed at boot time. Then, if the card is
inserted, the adapter stops functioning. If both are inserted at boot
time, you have to remove and reconnect the USB adapter, then it works.
I haven't had a chance to research it further. My intuition is it's a
plug-n-pray problem. My point is, you might want to broaden your
investigation and see if there is something else causing your problem.
