However a gps does provide some useful information that can be used in conjunction with paper charts. e.g. My Meridian has all of the nav aids in the database so I can triangulate. For boating you are going to have to buy the CD with the charts so figure that into the total cost. Also I'm finding out that chart coverage varies so take a look at what is provided for your area before choosing whether to go Garmin or Magellan. Frankly I would choose based on chart coverage alone, the units themselves are quite similar. Mike
