Software question - parsing track data

I'm trying to extract the altitude information from the Garmin track 
message. It's a float at byte 15, but I can't figure out how to read it (in 
C). If anyone can send me a code snippet, I'd appreciate it. Please swap 
the obvious with ray (dot) perkins in the address to reply directly.
