Large storms' effects on ocean currents

Idle curiosity - while watching Isabel traverse the Gulf Stream, I 
wonder what if any effect on the latter an intense storm like the former 
might have on general flow, meanders, and so forth. I suppose the 
situation may be like a gnat on an elephant's back...but I wonder.
