Re: Mineral Definition

There is a difference between containing minerals and being a mineral. You contain minerals in your body. Are you a mineral? I don't think so.

Apply that question to the list of substances you have, and try to convince yourself yes or no, and why?

You also must realize, that now, with the origin of biogeochemistry, and things like iron fixing bacteria, and manganese nodule depositing things, as well as the possible involvement of critters in supposedly inorganic processes such as sinter and travertine, and the possible involvement of critters in hydrothermal sulphide deposits that the 'organic vs inorganic' origin problem may be rewritten any day now.

If this is homework, your teacher is going to want a list of the characteristics of a mineral, not just a yes or no is it a mineral?

Can
anyone help out there - thanks - Bob
