I hope someone out there knows the names of these two varieties of garnet. One type forms rhombic dodecahedron crystals; actually, more than one type does, as I have seen both green and red garnet crystals in this shape. The other type forms crystals that have 24 kite-shaped sides. This shape is sometimes incorrectly called a trapazeohedron; the correct name, which no one ever uses, is "kite icosotetrahedron". Does anyone know which varieties of garnet form these two crystal habits? If you reply to me by mail, be aware that my "reply to" is spamproofed.
