If you are used to paint with light photography, in which a number of
flashes are set off around a place with no natural light, this looks
pretty normal.. You can even make ghosts, and other cool effects without
very much technology involved.
Doesn't surprise me that people went in the place, even if it was 'hot'.
Observers at early nuclear tests did some pretty dumb stuff, and paid
for it later. Hey, they didn't know the long term effects of radiation
at the time. Remember, these were the days you were supposed to have a
bomb shelter in your basement, and come out 3 days later to a clean
sparkling world...
