Re: UK: AMERICA'S RUBBISH DUMP

Let's get this into perspective. Truth is, there are many many ships
going up and down the Tees every day with cargo's a lot worse. These
ships have NO CARGO on them at all. They are not cargo ships.
The reason we don't complain about all these other ships is because
there safety is controlled and because they provide many many jobs in
this area. These so-called 'Ghost Ships' will also have their safety
controlled and create many jobs.
Friends of the Earth argue that we should be concentrating on creating
jobs in more environmentally friendly sectors. What? Like all the call
centres springing up everywhere? Paying low wages and creating no
skill base?
Bottom line is, these ships are creating jobs...good SKILLED work in
the engineering industry, an industry that Teesside is proud of, but
one that is in decline.
Environmental pressure groups are claiming that oil will leak from
these vessels, causing problems with wildlife in the Tees Estuary.
These vessels will be stored in docks, with an Oil boom over the
entrance as a precaution, so that any oil will be captured before it
enters the Tees.
They also claim that PCB's are contained on these ships. This is true
and is not being hidden by Able UK, nor anyone else in favour of these
ships coming to Teesside.
However, when you consider these are not liquid PCB's and the fact
that The Food Standards Agency reports that 90% of human exposure to
dioxins like PCB's is through food due to emissions from old
incinerators, then it makes you think whether or not Friends of the
Earth are wasting good campaigning money on pointless campaigns that
will get them MAXIMUM MEDIA COVERAGE.
I support many of Friends of the Earths campaigns...things like more
investigations into GM food and the promotion of recyling in homes,
but they do not have my support on this issue and I believe they are
misleading the public by only explaining half the facts
