GAO Reports Superfund To Run Out Of Money: The General Accounting Office (GAO) has issued a report that shows the EPA's fund for cleaning up hazardous waste sites, known as Superfund, will be depleted by the end of the 2003 fiscal year. CERCLA established the Superfund program in 1980, and traditionally used a combination of taxes on chemical and petroleum industries and congressional appropriations to fund the cleanup of sites identified by the EPA's National Priorities List (NPL). The GAO reports that as a result of an ever-growing NPL and a funding shift toward general revenues, the fund will have a deficit of $4 million by the end of fiscal year 2003.
