Probably conversion artefacts. Yes, I would expect it to happen in all 
instances where the number of pixels/height or pixels/width in the 
display is different from the source material. It's more noticeable 
with a flat panel display because they are physically constructed with 
lots of separate display elements, whereas a CRT scans a continuous 
surface with an electron beam.
