Surely LEDs would be better (e.g. Lumileds 5W luxeon star in a range
of colours).  That would bring the cost down.

There may be some sort of shielding issue, but isn't there some sort
of doped glass used for windows in radiation situations?  Or a thin
(so as to be partially transparent) metal coating on 1 face.

Would decrease the effficiency though.
