And, if > I understand your setup correctly, you run the risk that the aluminum > foil will contact the base and create a shock hazard. no, not seriously, the ballast is above the socket, so the foil is about 1.5-2" above that. a finger test, both w/o shades, indicates a significant drop in both ballast and glass temp. the only possible dis-advantage, barring appearance, would be to over do it and run the lamp temp below optimum temp. only time will tell if it makes any difference. i got the idea from a web site, cannot remember (yet) where, but some lamps are being offered like this, maybe aftermarket adapters, with the same intent that i mentioned. --Loren >
