Maybe.  Apparently sometimes they work, and sometimes they don't.  From some of
the research I have done, a trace of silica must be present for it to work, and I
don't have the equipement to check for that. But the only other option would be to
use a ion exchange water softner and that would require lots of salt.

That would be a problem. Although there is a good 100' of land behind the house,
TVA claims domain over most of that for flood plain, and what is left has the
septic field in it.

It seems to do a pretty good job, heating 150 gallons of water about 6 degrees per
hour of operation.

We will once he moves in.  I plan on having the super heat heat the first tank,
and the gas heat the second.  Right now the superheat is heating both, and the gas
is on pilot only to save gas.
