A European standard dealing with functional safety aspects of gas detection
systems is in preparation by CENELEC SC31-9.  It was circulated for comment
earlier this year as preEN 50402:2002 'Requirements on functional safety of
fixed gas detection systems'.  It should be available through your national
standards organisation.  The standard applies the principles of IEC 61508 to
gas detection systems and modules (e.g. gas detectors).
