Ideally, the stress will absolutely NOT depend on the material, ... for loads where Hooke's Law applies and the geometry is simple and stays that way. E.g., calculate the stress in a bicycle spoke for a small tension force. Do you need to know any material properties? No; just the force and the area. -Mike-
