Not exactly the topic for this group, but it is a type of service thing. I would have bought a PCMCIA plugin card for the laptop. This card would plug in to the PCM slot on the side of the machine. This way, your operating system and mother board BIOS would see the port directly, and thus not require such complications as converting a port. The cost of the USB to Serial converter is probably more or about the same as the PCMCIA serial port card.
