Actually NSA/CSS has a long history with various crypto-related
compromises going back at least into the '50s. Not all of them are
general public knowledge. John Walker and friends are the best known
example.

To my knowledge all major US intel agencies both civilian and military
have been penetrated at one time or another by the opposition.
