I think that the case that deregulation of elements of the immune
system are involved in the aging. However, I think that the article
failed to mention a few key issues. I wrote the author an email that
included the following:
1) NSAIDs appear to be quite strongly linked to development of congestive
heart failure.
The association has be be noted recently in several medical journals.
However, the mass media has not publicized this - possibly for fear of
offending advertisers.
See, for example:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=10737277&dopt=Abstract
"Consumption of NSAIDs and the development of congestive heart failure
in elderly patients:
an underrecognized public health problem" Archives of Internal
Medicine, 23Oct 2000
2) Naproxen was probably chosen in the Alzheimers prevention test to please
its commercial sponsors.
Ibuprofen would likely have been a better choice. See:
http://www.myriad.com/pharma/alzheimers.htm
3) You did not mention the tetracycline family of antibiotics, but they are
able to dramatically
reduce C-Reactive Protein levels. See, for instance:
http://www.natural-hrt.com/artman/publish/article_133.shtml
Also note that the tetracycline derivative, doxycycline may slow the
progression of Alzheimers:
http://www.pslgroup.com/dg/23c2ea.htm
Doxycycline and minocycline and other tetracyclines appear to inhibit
the caspase enzymes which induce
neural cell death in Huntington's, Alzheimers, Parkinson's and other
brain diseases. See:
