It sounds like you might be referring to Cotton and Wilkinson
(and Murillo on 6th Ed.), "Advanced Inorg Chem".  That book
is rather dry.  I was referring to "Chemical Applications
of Group Theory, 2nd (or 3rd) Ed." which gives a concise rigorous
treatment of the subject ("applications of group theory in 
molecules - character tables and the like." as the original 
poster put it).
