I tried some vinegar, it helped a bit but the toughest stains were still there. So I dug out some HCl and made an improvised glove from some plastic wrap. A few drops dabbed on a cloth, removed the stains in seconds. I was careful to avoid contact with the nearby metal. Problem solved, thanks for your help!
