By analogy - are you are positing an imperfect designer for the
life we see to exist, or to have existed in the past on the
planet?

I do not see design in nature, other than in what nature has done
within the boundaries imposed upon her by the fundamental
constants.
Chance accidents are just as much a part of nature as everything
else. Contrary to Einstein's denial of the fact, God does indeed
play dice.

Purpose is a strange word to use, because it gives humanity too
much importance when the argument of purpose is reduced to
ascribing purposes which suit us to natural events which would
happen just as readily were we not here to see them.
I do not think the analogy of the machines we see around us
("concorde") is a good analogy for the natural world as it a
priori implies a designer when an improvement or replacement is
brought into service in Concorde's niche.
This would imply frequent intervention over the last 4.5 billion
years from the deity/designer, something which does not tally
with the evidence we see around us.
If you want, feel free to take this dialogue to e-mail so we
don't clutter up the newsfeed.
Best wishes,
