Completely aside from the whole creationist nonsense...While it hasn't been
done yet, there is nothing that we know of that would prevent you from making a
female clone from a male mammal. You'd need to do a little genetic engineering
to remove the "Y" and add a second copy of the male's "X." The reverse (female
original to male clone) would be impossible without bringing in a "Y" from a
male donor.
    If memory serves, the thylacine that they are getting the DNA from was
male, so in order to bring the species back to life, they'll need to cross this
technical barrier (among a lot of others.)
