Need help with rescue gecko! Please!

Sorry if this is a dupe.. but my ISP likes to eat newsgroup posts..

Hey all..

Today I rescued a badly neglected gecko from a friend of a friend. The
previous owner stated that he hasn't fed the gecko in over TWO
MONTHS(!!??). It's water dish was also bone dry.. lord knows for how
long. It also had no heating lamp. When I expressed concern about the
lack of the essentials.. food.. water.. he said I could take it if I
wanted because he was just building up the nerve to flush it down the
toilet. What could I say?

First things first, I know nothing at all about geckos. I did some
google research and bought the following for his 10 gallon aquarium:
Heat lamp, crickets, water dish that allows cricket escape,
vitamin/calcium powder. The tank is lined with dry peat mossy stuff
that the guy gave me. Also in the tank is a hidey cave, some climbing
sticks, and a plastic lid with some calcium powder on it. Is this
adequate housing?

As for the condition of the animal.. he looks to be okay from the
pictures of other geckos I've seen. He's a little thin, his skin is a
bit wrinkly on the legs and neck(dehydration?), but he's responsive to
pokings and has leaped about his cage a few times. He flicks his
tongue quite a bit, and his eyes move around quite a bit. At any rate,
he is in FAR better condition than this poor little guy I found on the
web (http://www.geckonetwork.com/storylucky.htm), so I'm confident
mine will survive his brief brush with neglect.

There was a brief incident when moving him.. he leaped onto the floor
unexpectedly and ran like crazy. We found and captured him after 20
mins, seemingly not worse for wear.

One thing is bothering me though.. he hasn't eaten in months, so I put
a dusted cricket in as soon as I got him situated, and he hasn't gone
for it. Or the water. Is this stress due to moving/escape attempt? How
long should I wait this out before becoming (more) concerned?

Another thing, I can't for the life of me figure out what breed he is!
I've looked and looked and looked at pictures on the web but I can't
find any exact matches. Could he coloring be dull due to lack of
nutrition? No digicam to get a pic right now.. I'll see if I can
borrow a friends. In the meantime, any help would be greatly
appreciated! I'd like to know what breed he is so I can figure out his
moisture requirements.

Some descriptors:
- Approx 6 inches from end of nose to end of tail
- Pinkish on the legs, pale yellow on the back with thin feint, thin
white stripes running width-wise from tail to neck. Belly is
completely pink (and a tad see through?!).
- seems to have smooth body/tail, no bumps/ridges
- he has sticky feet (walks up walls and on roof of aquarium with
ease)
- he's a toungue flicker
- resembles the skunk gecko in head/body shape, but does not have
skunk gecko stripe
- very fast (escape attempt proved this)
- seems slightly aggresive (repeatedly attacked a wet QTip I was
rubbing him down with)

Any info/suggestions would be appreciated! Please reply in group, as
this email address is just a spam collector and is not checked!
Thanks!
