realy the only way is to sex them with a probe, but you can also tell by the
size sometimes not all the time in lizards. i think but not foresure that the
females in 5 lined skinks are bigger than males.  go out and buy petersons
field guide for reptiles and amphibians of central and eastern america and it
will tell you everthing you would want to know about local species of herps.
