Stocking information sought for a new trout fishery

Hi All

In 2004, we are opening a trout fly fishery on a previously un-stocked
reservoir, details of which are as follows:

UK location
16.5 acres, with a maximum depth at the dam end of about 80'
Four feeder streams of various sizes
pH nominally 6.5
Head of wild perch already in residence
Water quality checked and givem all clear for stocking trout

I understand that the maximum reccommended stocking density is about
130lb/acre, which amounts to some 2145lb of trout to reach that level
for the res.

We are thinking in terms of doing the initial stocking around the end
of February 2004, with the fishing season commencing mid March. Are
there likely to be any problems putting the whole stock in in one go,
or, for that matter, stocking at that time of year?

We will be operating a catch-return system, to keep tabs on the weight
of fish removed - obviously this will not take account of predation
due to birds and/or poachers and we will have to make some allowance
for these factors.

What is the reccommended policy for topping up the stock throughout
the season? We presumably do not want to reach the end of the season
with the stock level at or close to the level at the season's outset -
does anyone have any guide lines on this?

We intend to keep things fairly simple in the first year and stock
predominantly rainbows, with perhaps a couple of hundred small
brownies that will be left to grow on, (i.e. nobody will be allowed to
take them).

It has been suggested however that we look at introducing some 'blues'
and 'tigers', perhaps in the second season. Are there any unforseen
consequences of mixing sub-species that we need to be aware of?

Thanking you in anticipation of any advice given.

Regards

Ted Wilson
