V.S. Ramachandran also addresses this in Phantoms in the Brain.  He
suggests that it evolved as a signal when a perceived threat turned
out to be trivial.  That's what makes something humorous:  the
punchline is more trivial than the expected outcome of an otherwise
serious (or mundane) plot line.
