The answer to your initial question: The spider is a "Crab-like" or "Spiny-backed" Orb-weaver,\ Gasteracantha cancriformis. I know because I recently managed to photograph one in Austin. They are active in the woods now. Another amazing thing is how different the spider looks from the bottom.
