On holiday last week in Cephalonia (Ionian islands, off the west coast of the Greek mainland) I saw several examples of what I am almost certain were Swallowtail butterflies (Papilio machaon); large, energetic, the right general coloration, blue markings along the edge of the hind wing and two red dots. They did not settle much but I did manage to get quite a good look at one example with my binoculars focused in close. The one thing that puzzles me is that the one I could see clearly through the glasses did not appear to have any "tails" to the hind wings. Is it likely that I was in fact looking at some other species? Or do some races have smaller tails? If not then I must not have looked carefully enough. They were beautiful, tails or no!
