Decent photo, but not a humming bird moth (Macroglossum stellatarum). Surely
it's a Striped Hawk-moth (Hyles livornica) - a scarcer migrant, but seems to
be having quite a good year.

That's for the correction (if, in fact, it's a correct correction. :-) I looked up humming bird moth on the Web and it was a dead ringer for what I saw.) I'll check those links when I have more time.


BTW, I live at about 6400 ft. altitude at the base of the Sawtooth Mountains in central Idaho, USA. We don't get many insects, I suppose because the night time temperatures often dip below freezing even in the summer. At this time of the year the raptors are gathering for their migration and passing though the basin, so it's a great time for birding.
