I build our cabinets here using melamine sheet, 3/4 inch thick, white
on one side.  the white makes for a professional looking cabinet
inside, then I use laminate (formica, etc) on the outside, I purchase
3/4 inch aluminum angle in bulk and cut it to size for drawer slides. 
I can build a 12 drawer cabinet for about $150.00 in materials, and it
looks and works excellent.  If you can sweet talk a cabinet friend
into helping you out, the process is very simple.  I have pics of my
