Baton Rouge Observatory Activities November 7 - 10

FRIDAY, November 7
SPECIAL PRESENTATION...7:00 pm. Dr. Brad Schaefer, Astronomy Professor
LSU presents a presentation on lunar eclipses and their affect on
history just in time for the November 8th total lunar eclipse. Come
enjoy his presentation and then come back the following evening for
the total Lunar Eclipse!
TELESCOPE VIEWING...8:00 - 9:00 pm. Telescope viewing, weather
permitting, is supported by members of the Baton Rouge Astronomical
Society and LSU Astronomers.

SATURDAY, November 8
LUNAR ECLIPSE STUDY AND PLANISPHERE MAKING CLASS...10:00 am. Tonight
there will be a rare lunar total eclipse. What is an eclipse and why
does it happen? Come to our Saturday science class and find out. We
will be demonstrating how an eclipse occurs so your child will have an
understanding of what is happening that same evening. Suggested age is
4th thru 8th grade. Afterwards we will be making a planisphere (a map
of the stars) of your very own. Planispheres are like a roadmap to the
stars and are invaluable in backyard star viewing. We will also teach
you how to use one to find your favorite constellations. Class time is
from 10:00 am - 12:00 noon.
SPECIAL EVENT...5:00 pm Come out to the Observatory and join us for a
view of the total lunar eclipse! We will have the campfire and
marshmallows ready for you as well as the telescopes up and running as
we all enjoy this beautiful and rare event. The fun starts at 5:00 pm.
Activities will end at 10:30. Open and free to the public!
