Well, if things keep going the way they are, we'll certainly know if there are, or are not, technological civilizations such as ourselves out there within a 1000 LY's, or so, of the Sun. All the most likely stars, and others, will have been searched numerous times over the next 20+ years with ever increasing sensitivity! ... So I think that the chances are good in the next 20 some odd years that we'll know one way or the other, and that Shostak's statement is reasonable (expected?) ...
