Well, if things keep going the way they are, we'll certainly know if there
are, or are not, technological civilizations such as ourselves out there
within a 1000 LY's, or so, of the Sun. All the most likely stars, and
others,
will have been searched numerous times over the next 20+ years with
ever increasing sensitivity! ...

So I think that the chances are good in the next 20 some odd years that
we'll know one way or the other, and that Shostak's statement is
reasonable (expected?)  ... I'm not sure it is so bold a statement to make
myself ...
