If one acts like a jerk on numerous occasions, even if only in jest, I don't
think you can really blame someone else for being suspicious that it may happen
again in the future.  

People can and will turn over a new leaf but there are those who don't forgive
and forget as well.  

We've got people at work who are always pulling practical jokes, making things
up in jest, etc and when the time comes when they are actually serious,
everyone doubts them.  It's human nature.
