Hmmm, you've got me thinking here. I have an Aurora headlamp that I love, but would rather not paint fingernail polish over it as I use it for camping. The headlamp consists of three white LED bulbs with varying degrees of brightness. Would some red plastic (picked up at a local plastics supply store) do the trick? Or are the red LEDs really crucial to achieving good night vision?
Good luck with the project but please find a more suitable light for when/if you observe with others. Or keep your head down anytime the light is on. :^)
Yeah, I wonder exactly the same thing every time when someone proposes using headlamp (even with red LEDs) for chart reading. It is fine as long as there is nobody around. At a starparty it would be a nightmare for everyone except the owner...
Never seen one used this way though, so cannot confirm how bad (or good) it is.
