You are quite right, Inger. Gans had a number of naive and callow folks fooled here in 1997. They thought he was a Professor of History at New York University. Gans was not at all eager to dissuade them of that idea. He liked the assumed, fraudulent role as Master of the Revels ---- in a newsgroup devoted to the study of Mediaeval History. At one point he even said he has played a mediaeval military historian at conferences. Guffaw! But I demolished his flimflammery and he finally admitted, rather sheepishly, that he had never taught a History course in his entire life ---- and certainly was not teaching one now. Gans has never forgiven me for exposing him like that. He would not be allowed to teach History in any reputable university History Department either. What is even MORE obvious is the simple fact that he has not TAKEN many History courses ---- and probably NONE at the graduate level. Further, he has NO degrees in History. Appalling! He teaches a watered-down version of Sociology ---- the sort of thing called "Social Studies" in some not-so-good secondary schools ---- in just ONE little pissant, two-credit course dwelling on mediaeval technology in "everyday life." Gans ---- a self-professed "medievalist" with no History and no languages. A Monoglot....Chained Inside His Bermuda Triangle Of The Mind.... Hilarious! What is even WORSE, he is NOW claiming expertise in: Analytical Chemistry 15th Century Continental European Mediaeval History Palaeography Art History Incunabula [Books published before 1501] 15th Century Mediaeval Manuscripts Mediaeval Maps 15th Century Christian Church History 15th Century Mediaeval Ink-Making Techniques Reading, Understanding, Parsing, Analysing And Interpreting Mediaeval Latin [and/or Classical Latin] PLM PIXE Radiocarbon Dating Of 15th Century Mediaeval Documents Raman Microprobe Spectroscopy Historical Mineralogy Cartography Codicology In NONE of which does he have any ACTUAL expertise or credentials.... Many of us here, MYSELF INCLUDED, don't MAKE any special claims. We admit we are amateurs, although several of us DO have degrees in History. We don't call ourselves "medievalists" or some other silly-buggers title either. Gans is not willing just to be one of the amateurs. He wants to be Papa Bear, at the head of the table in the Greenwich Village Bar, holding forth and "knocking those wrong ideas about the Middle Ages" out of skulls. But he's totally unqualified to do so, at any more than the amateur popularizer level. And he gets scores of things wrong. Hilarious! Deus Vult. "For we must consider that we shall be a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us, so that if we shall deal falsely with our God in this work we have undertaken, and so cause him to withdraw His present help from us, we shall be made a story and a byword through the world." John Winthrop [1588-1649] A Model of Christian Charity [1630], A Sermon Delivered aboard Arbella, enroute to the New World; First Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. President George Walker Bush and John Winthrop are pursuing similar policies ---- The American Policy. Good Show....
