Well, here's a useful starting-point:
The cartography of the Old World on the Vinland Map is adapted from the
style of a mappa mundi, which would have been drawn to fit within a
circular frame. Ignoring, for the time being, the chunk chopped off the
bottom of Africa, what shape of frame would best fit the Old World as
depicted on the Vinland Map?
